Charles XV belonged to the House of Bernadotte, a royal dynasty of French origin that has reigned over Sweden since 1818. Founded by Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's marshals, the House of Bernadotte succeeded the House of Holstein-Gottorp.
