Ortiz made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins on September 2, 1997, at the age of 22. He started at first base and went 0-for-4 at the plate. Ortiz played for the Twins for five seasons, primarily as a designated hitter, before being traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2003.
