Mawson joined the University of Adelaide in 1905. He was appointed as a Lecturer in Mineralogy and Petrology, and later became Professor of Geology and Mineralogy in 1921. Mawson's research focused on the geology of Antarctica, and he led several expeditions to the continent. He was also involved in the establishment of the Mawson Institute for Antarctic Research, which is now a leading center for Antarctic research.
