Hans-Joachim Marseille was killed in a flying accident on 30 September 1942. He was flying his Bf 109 G-6, nicknamed the "Yellow 14", over the Bay of Sousse in Tunisia when it collided with another aircraft. The cause of the collision is unknown, but it is believed that Marseille may have been attempting to evade anti-aircraft fire. He was killed instantly, and his body was recovered from the wreckage.
