Jacqueline du Pré was born in Oxford, England in 1945. She began playing the cello at the age of five and gave her first public performance at the age of seven. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and made her professional debut at the age of 16. Du Pré was considered one of the greatest cellists of her generation.
