Answer
Peter Doherty and Rolf M. Zinkernagel shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996. They were awarded the prize for their discovery that T lymphocytes recognise antigens only when they are presented by antigen-presenting cells. This discovery has led to a better understanding of how the immune system works and has helped in the development of new vaccines and treatments for infectious diseases.
