The overthrow of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the Tunisian president, sparked a wave of revolutions across the Arab world known as the Arab Spring. Inspired by the success of the Tunisian people, Tawakkol Karman redirected the focus of ongoing Yemeni protests, which had initially been primarily concerned with economic and political issues, towards demanding democratic reforms and an end to the authoritarian rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
