Vito Volterra worked in France for eight years. He first arrived in Paris in 1900 and was appointed professor of mathematical physics at the Sorbonne. He remained in France until 1908, when he returned to Italy to take up a position at the University of Rome. During his time in France, Volterra made important contributions to the fields of elasticity, hydrodynamics, and mathematical biology.
