Yehuda Amichai was an Israeli poet who won many international poetry prizes, including the Goethe Prize, the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, and the Nelly Sachs Prize. He was born in Germany in 1924 and immigrated to Israel in 1936. He served in the Israeli army during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and was wounded in battle.
