The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, was first established in the United States in Manhattan, New York City in 1966 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Prabhupada, an Indian spiritual teacher and founder-acharya of ISKCON, introduced the teachings of Gaudiya Vaishnavism to the Western world and attracted a significant following of Western disciples.
