Aaron Ciechanover received his PhD degree in 1974 from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He worked on protein degradation in his PhD studies and went on to study the ubiquitin proteasome pathway, which is responsible for the degradation of proteins. He shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose for his work on this pathway.
