Abbas II of Persia, who reigned from 1642 to 1666, was a Shia Muslim who forced conversions on many of his subjects, including Iranian Jews. Although Abbas II initially tolerated the Jewish community, he eventually became increasingly intolerant of religious minorities. In 1654, he ordered the mass conversion of Iranian Jews to Islam.
