Abd al-Karim Qasim lost power in 1963. He was overthrown by a military coup led by Abdul Salam Arif. The coup was supported by the Ba'ath Party, which had been banned by Qasim. Arif became the new president of Iraq, and the Ba'ath Party became the country's ruling party.
