Al-Walid I succeeded Abd al-Malik as the Umayyad caliph in 705 CE. During his reign, the Umayyad Empire reached its peak of territorial expansion, stretching from Spain to India. Al-Walid was a skilled military commander and a patron of the arts. He is best known for his construction of the Great Mosque of Damascus, one of the most important architectural landmarks of the Islamic world.
