First in birth order among the Muhajirun, or early converts to Islam who migrated from Mecca to Medina with the Prophet Muhammad, Ibn al-Zubayr was born into a prominent family. His father, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, was one of the Ten Promised Paradise, while his mother, Asma bint Abi Bakr, was the daughter of the first caliph, Abu Bakr.
