Abd al-Rahman III was the great-grandson of al-Rahman I, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty in Spain. Abd al-Rahman III succeeded his grandfather, Abd Allah ibn Muhammad, to the throne in 912 and ruled until 961. During his reign, he expanded the Umayyad Caliphate to its greatest extent, conquering much of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa.
