Emir Abdelkader was a scholar and Sufi who found himself leading a military campaign in Algeria during the 19th century. Abdelkader was a devout Muslim who believed that jihad, or holy war, was justified only in self-defense. However, when the French invaded Algeria in 1830, Abdelkader felt that he had no choice but to take up arms against them.
