Nasution was removed from positions of power in 1971 after Suharto consolidated power. Suharto had been appointed commander-in-chief of the armed forces in 1966 and then president in 1967. He gradually removed Nasution from his positions, including as minister of defense and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. In 1971, Nasution was stripped of his military rank and retired.
