Taib Mahmud belongs to the Melanau ethnic group. The Melanau are an indigenous people of Sarawak, Malaysia, and they make up the largest ethnic group in the state. They are believed to have migrated from southern China or Taiwan to Borneo sometime in the 1st millennium AD. The Melanau are traditionally a seafaring people, and many of them still make their living as fishermen.
