The answer is yes. Dutch explorer Abel Tasman made two voyages to the Southern Ocean in 1642 and 1644. On his first voyage, he discovered the island of Tasmania, which he named Van Diemen's Land. He also sighted New Zealand, but did not land there. On his second voyage, he landed on the North Island of New Zealand and made contact with the Māori people.
