What was Abel Tasman assigned to discover in the Southern Pacific Ocean?

  • New Plant Species

  • New Inhabitants

  • New Trade Routes

  • Lost Shipwrecks

Answer

Abel Tasman was assigned to discover new trade routes in the Southern Pacific Ocean by the Dutch East India Company. In 1642, he discovered the southern coast of Australia, the first European to do so, and also New Zealand. He then sailed through the strait that now bears his name, between Australia and New Guinea, and continued to the Moluccas, where he arrived in 1643.
