Abelardo L. Rodríguez made his political comeback in 1940, twelve years after leaving the office of President of Mexico. Following the assassination of President-elect Álvaro Obregón, Rodríguez was appointed interim president, serving until 1934. He then retired from politics until his return in 1940, when he ran unsuccessfully for the presidency as the candidate of the Partido de la Revolución Mexicana (PRM).
