Abhisit became Prime Minister of Thailand in 2008 at the age of 44. He was the youngest person to hold the position since the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932. Abhisit is a member of the Democrat Party and has served as a member of parliament since 1994. He was appointed prime minister by King Bhumibol Adulyadej after the military coup that ousted Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006.
