Abu Qatada is a Jordanian national. Originally part of Al-Qaeda in the 1990s, Qatada became known as an influential ideologue for the global jihadist movement throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s due to his public comments in praise of terrorist attacks on non-combatant civilians.
