In 2006, Adam G. Riess shared the Shaw Prize in Astronomy with Brian P. Schmidt and Saul Perlmutter for their discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe. Riess and his colleagues used the Hubble Space Telescope to measure the brightness of type Ia supernovae, which are used as standard candles to measure the distance to distant galaxies.
