Pope Stephen V succeeded Adrian III as the head of the Catholic Church. He was elected in 885 after Adrian III's death. Stephen's papacy was marked by ongoing conflicts with the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles the Fat, over the control of church territories and the appointment of bishops.
