Adrienne Clarkson was raised in Ottawa. She was born in Montreal in 1939, but her family moved to Ottawa when she was a young child. She attended school in Ottawa and went on to study at the University of Toronto. She later worked as a journalist and broadcaster, and she was the first woman to be appointed Governor General of Canada.
