The Anglo-Saxon King Æthelred I (847/48-871) had two sons who reached maturity: Ælfred the Great and Æthelred. His other son, Æthelhelm, died during childhood. Ælfred succeeded Æthelred as King of Wessex and, later on, became the only Anglo-Saxon ruler to be accorded the epithet'the Great'.
