Æthelwold, the son of Æthelred I, challenged his brother Alfred for the throne of England. After Alfred's death in 901, Æthelwold briefly held Wessex before Edward the Elder, Alfred's son, secured his rule. Æthelwold continued to contest Edward's rule, allying with the Danes in East Anglia and Northumbria, but was eventually defeated and exiled in 905.
