The title of Duke of Goa was bestowed upon Afonso de Albuquerque in 1515, in recognition of his military achievements in the Portuguese Empire. He had been a key figure in the Portuguese conquest of Goa in 1510, and had also led successful campaigns against the Arabs in the Persian Gulf and East Africa.
