Agostinho Neto lived primarily in Africa. He was born in Angola, a country in southwestern Africa, in 1922. He spent much of his life fighting for the independence of Angola from Portugal. Neto was a successful poet and politician. He became the first president of Angola after the country gained its independence in 1975. He died in 1979.
