António Agostinho Neto was a prominent Angolan politician and poet who served as the first President of Angola from 1975 until his death in 1979. He was born in 1922 in the Portuguese colony of Angola. Neto studied medicine in Portugal and became involved in the anti-colonial movement. He was imprisoned for his political activities and later exiled to Morocco.
