Agostinho Neto was a physician before he became involved in politics. He attended medical school in Lisbon, Portugal, and practiced medicine for a number of years before becoming involved in the independence movement in Angola. He was elected the first president of Angola after independence in 1975, and served in that position until his death in 1979.
