Ahmed Ben Bella became the head of government in Algeria on 27th September 1962, a few months after Algeria gained independence from France. Ben Bella was a member of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and had been imprisoned by the French during the Algerian War. After the war, he became the first President of Algeria. He was overthrown in a coup in 1965 and died in 2012.
