On 8 February 1963, al-Bakr and other members of the Free Officers, led by Abd al-Salam Aref, overthrew Qasim in a bloodless military coup, known as the Ramadan Revolution. The coup was largely motivated by the perceived secularism and Arab nationalism of the Qasim government, and the coup leaders pledged to restore Islam to its rightful place in Iraqi society.
