Answer
In 1963, the Ba'athist cause was revived by a military coup led by Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr and Salah Jadid. The coup was successful, and the Ba'ath Party became the ruling party in Iraq. The new regime was initially committed to socialist principles, but it soon became more authoritarian and corrupt. In 1968, al-Bakr was overthrown by Saddam Hussein, who ruled Iraq until 2003.
