Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr was president of Iraq from 17 July 1968 to 16 July 1979. He was a member of the Ba'ath Party, which took control of Iraq in a coup d'état in 1968. Under al-Bakr's leadership, Iraq nationalised the oil industry and embarked on a program of economic development. He also supported the Palestinian cause and opposed Israel.
