Al-Bakr and the Ba'ath Party regained power in 1968 when they overthrew the government of Abdul Rahman Arif. The Ba'ath Party had previously been in power from 1963 to 1966, but had been overthrown by Arif in a military coup. Al-Bakr and the Ba'ath Party then ruled Iraq until 2003, when they were overthrown by the United States-led invasion of Iraq.
