Saddam Hussein succeeded al-Bakr as the President of Iraq in 1979. Hussein was a Ba'athist and had been involved in Iraqi politics since the 1950s. He was a strong leader and quickly consolidated his power, becoming the absolute ruler of Iraq. He ruled the country for over 20 years, during which time he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.
