Ahmed Sékou Touré followed the religion of Islam. He was born into a Muslim family in Kouroussa, French Sudan (present-day Guinea). He studied the Quran and Islamic law as a child. As an adult, he became a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Sunni Muslim organization. Touré's Islamic faith was an important part of his identity and his political philosophy.
