Before Ahmed Sékou Touré became a national leader, he was a political leader. He was a member of the French African political party Rassemblement Démocratique Africain, and was elected to the Territorial Assembly of Guinea in 1946. He served as the President of the Guinean Assembly from 1957 to 1958, and was the first President of Guinea from 1958 to 1984.
