Akebono was born in Hawaii and became a sumo wrestler in Japan. He won the top makuuchi division in 1993 and was the first non-Japanese to be promoted to the highest rank of yokozuna in 1997. Akebono retired in 2001 and became a coach at Azumazeki stable. He was the head coach of the stable from 2008 to 2018. Akebono is now a sumo commentator.
