Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf was a prominent Umayyad governor of Iraq and Khurasan in the early 8th century. He founded the city of Wasit in 702 as a garrison town and administrative center. The city quickly became a major center of trade and culture, and was a key link in the Silk Road.
