Al-Masudi (895-956) was a Persian historian, geographer, and encyclopedist who is often referred to as the "Herodotus of the Arabs". He wrote a vast history of the world, entitled Muruj al-Dhahab wa Ma'adin al-Jawhar, which has been translated into English as The Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems.
