Alain LeRoy Locke became a Rhodes Scholar in 1907. He was the first African-American to receive this honor. He attended Oxford University in England and studied philosophy, political science, and economics. After graduating from Oxford, Locke returned to the United States and became a professor of philosophy at Howard University.
