In 1999, the French athletics magazine Athlétisme Magazine voted Alain Mimoun as the French Athlete of the 20th Century. Mimoun was a long-distance runner who competed in the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics. He won a gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1956 Olympics and a bronze medal in the 5,000 metres at the 1952 Olympics. He was also the world champion in the 10,000 metres in 1955.
