The Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) was the professional head of the British Army from 1904 to 1964, when it was renamed the Chief of the General Staff. The CGS was responsible for the operational command and administration of the army, and for advising the government on military matters. The CGS was also a member of the War Cabinet.
