Saint Alban (also Albanus) was the first British Christian martyr, who is venerated as a saint. Alban is believed to have lived in the early 4th century during the Roman occupation of Britain. He was a pagan who sheltered a Christian priest, Amphibalus, during a time of persecution. When the authorities came to arrest the priest, Alban changed clothes with him and was arrested instead.
