Answer
Johnston was killed at the Battle of Shiloh, a key Civil War battle in 1862. Union forces led by Ulysses S. Grant launched a surprise attack on the Confederate army under Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. Johnston was struck by a stray bullet while inspecting the front lines and died shortly after, making him the highest-ranking Confederate casualty of the war to that point.
