Collins was the first Haitian-American NFL player. In 1975, he became the first player of Haitian descent to play in the NFL. He was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and moved to the United States when he was five years old. He played college football at the University of Miami, and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 1975 NFL Draft.
